The principal of Shoreline Design Group, Inc., Bernhard Thuersam, CPBD, NCIDQ Certified, brings many years of experience and ability to the firm's specialties of custom home design and interior design.

Each custom home is personally designed by Mr. Thuersam; and his expertise not only assures our clients of timely architectural review approvals in the many planned communities we practice in,  but also ongoing assistance with builder bid packages to ensure equal competitive pricing from selected builders.

Beginning with a diverse education in architecture, interior design and landscape architecture, plus 8 years of apprenticeship and training under 3 registered architects, his over 30 years of design experience and knowledge of the construction process, specifications, structure and hurricane resistance is put to work for our clients.

Mr. Thuersam's exceptional professional reputation is underscored by all custom plans being reviewed and sealed by our structural engineering consultant to meet and exceed North Carolina Wind Code requirements, and his involvement in the bidding process and review of cost estimates for clients.

Related expertise is custom neighborhood entry and amenity design for area Plantations, and writing architectural review guidelines for residential developments. He also has served on several area architectural review committees/boards that review and approve submitted plans.

His professional recognition includes a 2009 Brunswick County Homebuilders Association "Million-Plus Category" Award for a custom Ocean Ridge Plantation residence; 1999 American Institute of Building Design (AIBD) national "First Place Commercial Category Award" for his renovation of the Wellington Square office complex in Wilmington, North Carolina and a 1995 national AIBD "Design Excellence Award" for the St. James Plantation Beach Club in Long Beach, North Carolina.

He earned the 1996 AIBD/North Carolina Society "Designers Choice Award" for his Avant Residence in Landfall, and the 1997 AIBD/North Carolina Society "Best Custom Home Award" for his Brady Residence,  also in Landfall. Mr. Thuersam has also received awards for "Best Design" in several categories in the 1994 AIBD/North Carolina Society design competition and has consistently won "Best Design Awards" in the annual Wilmington/Cape Fear Parade of Homes for his unique custom homes, builder speculative homes and multi-family developments.

Mr. Thuersam is certified by the National Council of Building Designer Certification (NCBDC) and the National Council of Interior Design Qualifications (NCIDQ). He holds undergraduate degrees in environmental and interior design from the State University of New York, College at Buffalo and Villa Maria College, respectively, with graduate study in Architecture, Landscape Architecture, City Planning, Historic Preservation and Interior Design at the University of Georgia.
